1.   When is the best time to visit Ha Giang

Ha Giang is beautiful all year round, you can travel to Ha Giang at any time of the year. However, to fully explore the beauty of this rocky plateau, you should come to Ha Giang at the following times below.

January: Flower season

Spring comes, everywhere from Quan Ba (Quyet Tien, Minh Tan), Yen Minh (Lao Va Chai, Na Khe, Bach Dich), Dong Van (Pho Bang, Pho Cao, Sung La, Sa Phin, and Phin Tung) , Meo Vac (Sung Tra, Sung Trai, Lung Phin), where peach trees, plum trees, and rapeseeds are blooming, along with the black slate of the rocky plateau. It will create a beautiful picture of Ha Giang as a lovely village

April, May: The growing season

In Vietnam, we call the wet season is the time of falling water when we start a new crop – so it is also called the growing season. Between April and May – the time of early summer rains, the locals make use of rainwater flowing down from Hoang Lien mountains to flow into their new crop – the water is pouring down from the streams on mountains to top layers, then down to lower layer – this scene is like sparkling mirrors reflecting the blue sky white clouds local farming work creating vivid pictures for photo lovers.

Coming to Ha Giang, visitors absolutely will see the picturesque rice fields in the growing season: Hoang Su Phi, Quan Ba twin mountains, or small fields dotted on the happy road Pi Pi Leng ...

September, October: Golden rice season

Ha Giang is a worldwide reputation for the Hoang Su Phi terraced rice fields, which were recognized as National Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2012. During the collecting season, those terraces in Hoang Su Phi seem like the golden stairs case to heaven with the sunray shine from the blue sky.


Notably, at the end of September and early October, terraced fields in Hoang Su Phi, Ha Giang always make the Northern mountainous area warm and productive by the golden of the ripe rice. Visitors immensely enjoy the majestic nature view, the riped rice fields with the terraced fields and the peaceful atmosphere here.

October to December: The Triangle Flower Season, the most beautiful season in Ha Giang

At the end of October, until December, lots of travellers visit to Ha Giang to see triangular flowers. Violet heart-shaped flowers spread across the hillsides.

2. How to get there

There are two ways to get to Ha Giang by bus or motorbike. Travel distance from Hanoi to Ha Giang is approximately 300 km by land. If you want to visit Ha Giang by bus, there are various bus companies from Hanoi to Ha Giang, for example Ha Giang limousine bus, express Ha Giang, Hung Thanh, Truly Ha Giang, … the price of the one-way bus ticket to Ha Giang around $9-22/ per passenger. Travelling by bus takes about 6-7 hours from Ha Noi to Ha Giang

On the other hand, travelling by motorbike might take a little bit longer about 8 hours but you will have opportunity to see the beautiful mountain scenery along your way.

3. What to see and visit in Ha Giang province?

Hoang Su Phi

Hoang Su Phi is an upland district of Ha Giang Province, Vietnam and also is one of Ha Giang’s attractions. The North is contiguous with China, the West is contiguous with Xin Man district, the East is contiguous with Vi Xuyen district, the South East and the South is contiguous with Bac Quang and Quang Binh districts in the same province.

Lung Cu Flagpole

Lung Cu village is very peaceful with smoke from roofs and children drive the herd of buffalo to the houses. The cold weather covers on children faces and their hair. The smoke spreads out and makes a corner of the dusk warmer. The road to Lung Cu flagpole has been rebuilt with a stair structure helping travelling easier. The higher, the perfect Lung Cu scenery is. See towards 4 sides, Lung Cu village is quiet in the light yellow sunset. Seeing more, you will be more charmed.

Dong Van old quarter 


Dong Van Town is located in the middle of the valley with the roky surrounding. There have only 40 roofs lined up together under a rocky mountain. If you can wake up early and get there, you will have an opportunity to see the unique picture of old quarter which is blended two colours: the bright yellow of the sunshine and grey of ancient houses.

The quarter is formed from the early 20th century, only has a few families of the H’mong, Tay and Chinese, gradually, more and more other local residents find it. Overall, the old quarter has Chinese’s architecture with two-story houses of yin and yang roofs, red lanterns…

Ma Pi Leng Pass

The Ma Pi Leng Pass is a mountain pass in the north of Vietnam, is approximately 20 kilometres long and located in Dong Van Plateau is 1200 m high above sea level, on the road named “Happy Street” which connects the towns of Dong Van and Meo Vac towns. Ma Pi Leng is the name of the rugged pass of Ha Giang. Ma Pi Leng in Mandarin is "horse’s nose", that means the horse that goes through the pass will also stop breathing, or the top of the mountain stands as the nose’s horse which you can imagine the dangers of the way you will go.

Quan Ba Twin Mountain

Standing on the peak of Yen Minh-Tam Son road, visitors can see the beautiful poetic town of Tam Son, mixed with terraced fields and mountains. And right here, the Twin Mountains appears with charming beauty like twenty – year - old female’s breasts. The natural picture of Quan Ba Twin Mountain is changed according to the season. The green of terraced rice fields, the splendid yellow of the ripe rice crop, the brown of the plowing season has created interesting colours for the landscape here.

Living in Tam Son, Quan Ba is mainly H'mong, Dao and Tay people... Natural beauty along with typical cultural characteristics of Ha Giang rock plateau always attracts tourists when they want to discover Ha Giang’s attraction.

4. The best Ha Giang cuisines visitors should eat before leaving

Rice noodle roll is a unique dish, different from other specialties in Ha Giang. This is a dish that tourists often choose for their breakfast when visiting to Ha Giang. The rice noodle roll are enjoyed when they have still been hot, it might eat with a soft-boiled egg. It is absolutely wonderful dish, you must try when visiting Ha Giang

Smoked meat

Smoked buffalo or pork meat are usually made from longitudinal slices of meat, each piece of buffalo meat, pork meat is skewered into big sticks and hung on the kitchen counter. Before taking it to the kitchen, meat is seasoned with chili, ginger, especially Zanthoxylum rhetsa. This dish is really delicious and especially without preservatives, is a favorite dish of travelers every time to Ha Giang.

Thanh Van corn wine is made from corn of highland, using traditional methods. The flavor is typical delicious, non – toxic compared with other local wine. Thanh Van corn wine cooperative has invested the technology system of formaldehyde filtering so that the quantity of wine product has been gradually become a favorite one of people when visiting Ha Giang.
